This victorian tiles restoration Nottingham project is about restoring a soiled and damaged victorian tile floor.

The floor is over 100 years old, so you can imagine it has suffered quite a bit of wear.

The result was a dull-looking, soiled floor that looked nothing like the original floor.

There were also areas of damage and lost tiles.

Victorian Tiles Nottingham Before Cleaing

I don’t undertake extensive tile repairs or replacement however in this case I had a solution that the client was happy with.

The Victorian Tiles tiles are installed in a hallway in The Park Estate, which has suffered a lot of foot traffic.

Victorian Tiles is a very popular floor tile due to its wear characteristics and attractive colours.

It had been some time since the Victorian Tiles was last sealed and the sealer had now worn down allowing dirt to become ingrained in the tiles and grout lines.

This beautiful tile floor now looked flat and uninteresting.

There were also areas of damage and lost tiles.

I don’t undertake extensive tile repairs or replacement however in this case I had a solution that the client was happy with.

They were looking for a clean floor, that would continue to look clean and display the natural colours in the tiles, without having to scrub the Victorian Tiles on hands and knees.

I surveyed the installation, noting the soiling in the tiles and grout lines.

We see this a lot with Victorian Tiles where the sealer has worn away, leaving the tiles exposed to soil.

Grout lines also trap dirt which can accumulate quickly as dirt is washed into the grout during cleaning, detracting from the appearance of the stone.

Cleaning Victorian Tiles Floor Tile and Grout

The Victorian Tiles cleaning process can splash strong cleaning chemicals onto walls and other surfaces.

The splashes can stain or damage paint and wax, so we normally protect these delicate surfaces.

But in this case, the hallway was being refurbished so there was no need for any protection.

I applied a Victorian Tiles cleaner and sealer remover onto the floors and gave the chemical time to soften any remaining sealer and soil residues.

After around 20 minutes, I used a rotary scrubbing machine to scrub the surface residues and soils off the surface of the tiles and grout, leaving a dirty slurry.

I removed the cleaning slurry with a powerful wet vacuum.

I repeated the cleaning and rinsing until the soil and old sealer residues were removed.

Victorian Tiles After Cleaning And A few Repairs

Sealing a Victorian Tiles Floor In The Park Estate.

We offer a number of Victorian Tiles sealing options for this floor type.

Giving a matt, satin or gloss finish

After discussing the options with the customer, we decided on a colour-enhancing impregnating sealer.

The sealer brings out the natural colours in the tiles.

The sealer gives a hard-wearing finish, protecting the surface of the Victorian Tiles and the grout.

The sealer also gives more time to wipe spills before they damage the floor

Importantly, the sealer makes the floor much easier to clean.

Wow, you transformed our Victorian Tiles floor. It looks like new again. We are delighted with the end result, would highly recommend.

Repairing Victorian Tiles

As I said earlier, I can not undertake extensive tile repair or replacement when undertaking Victorian Tiles Restoration work.

However, I can undertake minor repairs

On this floor, there were a number of missing tiles.

I used coloured grout to fill the voids with grout coloured closely to the original colour of the tiles.

This can be a hit and miss process, as grout colouring is not an exact science.

But in this case, my client was really happy with the results.

Victorian Tiles Maintenance Advice

Sealers protect your tiles from staining and enhance their appearance, however, they do wear down over time.

This is when dirt can become ingrained in the pores of the tile, so if you do want to keep your tile floor looking its best to ensure there is always a good coating of sealer.
