This Travertine cleaning project in Selby began after the homeowner noticed that her kitchen floor, although regularly cleaned and previously resealed, had gradually become darker and more difficult to maintain. Despite her efforts, the surface no longer responded to routine cleaning and remained tired and patchy.

She contacted us after seeking help with a soiled Travertine floor and wanted to understand why it no longer performed as it once had.

The Travertine floor was around ten years old. It had been cleaned and resealed multiple times over its life, but soil had gradually built up in the surface and grout lines, leaving the floor looking dull and uneven despite regular maintenance.

After inspecting the floor, it was clear that ingrained soil had accumulated within the stone and that previous sealing layers were no longer providing effective protection. The agreed approach focused on deep cleaning to remove this embedded contamination, followed by resealing to restore surface stability and appearance.

The cleaning process began by applying a heavy-duty cleaner to the floor, allowing sufficient time for it to break down the built-up soil in the stone and grout.

The solution was worked into the surface using rotary scrubbing equipment to loosen contamination trapped in the stone’s pores. This was followed by a pressurised water rinse and capture process that removed emulsified soil from both the Travertine and the grout lines.

During cleaning, several open holes were visible where previous filler had failed. These voids were filled using a colour-matched Jasmine grout and left to cure before sealing.

Once the floor was clean, dry, and stable, an impregnating sealer was applied to prime the stone. This was followed by multiple coats of a mid-sheen surface sealer to provide a consistent, easier-to-maintain finish.

The homeowner was pleased with the finished floor and noted improvements in both appearance and day-to-day usability.
