Travertine Floor Restoration in Southampton, Hampshire

This travertine floor restoration project in Southampton concerns a travertine floor installed across the kitchen, dining room and WC.

Without the correct maintenance regime, poor cleaning and foot traffic can soon turn travertine dull and flat — which is exactly what had happened here. The floor had seen a lot of wear and the use of incorrect cleaning products had damaged the tiles and grout lines.

The client had to scrub on hands and knees to remove soil from the grout, but could not remove the ingrained soil from the tiles themselves. The grout would quickly go dark again after each clean.

Travertine tiles in Southampton soiled, pitted and difficult to clean

The client wanted a floor that would continue to look clean and display the natural colours in the tiles, without needing to scrub on hands and knees. I surveyed the floor and recommended deep cleaning to restore the appearance of the stone, followed by sealing to protect it from dirt and staining. The homeowner agreed and we set a date to restore the travertine.

This project forms part of our detailed guide to travertine care: Travertine Flooring — Care, Cleaning, Repair and Restoration Explained.

Deep Cleaning the Travertine Floor

The travertine cleaning process can splash strong cleaning chemicals onto walls and other surfaces. The splashes can stain or damage paint and wax, so we protect these delicate surfaces before starting.

I applied a travertine cleaner and sealer remover onto the floors and gave the chemical time to soften any remaining sealer and soil residues.

After around 20 minutes, I used a rotary scrubbing machine to scrub the surface residues and soils off the tiles and grout, leaving a dirty slurry. I removed the cleaning slurry using pressurised rinse and capture equipment.

I repeated the cleaning until the soil and old sealer residues were fully removed.

Filling Holes and Stabilising the Voids

Holes are a natural feature of travertine, but they trap dirt, so it is best to fill them with a suitably rigid filler. If left unfilled, larger holes can become progressively larger as their edges crumble, eventually destabilising the tile.

The next step was to fill the holes in the travertine tiles and any areas of missing grout. We used a high-quality beige colour filler and were careful with the cleanup to leave as much filler as possible in the holes. The resulting fill was only slightly concave, so the holes will not collect soil going forward.

Sealing the Restored Travertine Floor

We offer a number of travertine sealing options for this floor type, giving a matt, satin or gloss finish. After discussing the options with the client, we decided on a topical satin-finish film-forming sealer. I applied a high-solids sealer that dried to a pleasant mid-sheen finish.

The sealer acts as a sacrificial wear layer, protecting the surface of the travertine and the grout. It also gives more time to wipe spills before they can damage the floor, and makes the floor significantly easier to clean. The client was delighted with the finish.

How This Floor Behaves After Restoration

Sealers protect tiles from staining and enhance their appearance, but they do wear down over time, particularly in high-traffic zones around the kitchen sink and garden access points. When the sealer wears, dirt can begin to collect in the pores of the tile again. To keep the floor looking its best, ensure there is always a good coating of sealer in place — an annual top-up in busy areas is usually sufficient.
