Why This Tumbled Travertine Floor Needed Restoration
We were contacted regarding our tumbled travertine restoration service because our client had a number of problems with their floor in Rhyl, Denbighshire. They wanted to understand what would be involved in restoring the floor.
After a quick chat, we agreed that there were two particular problems they were looking to solve.
First: As with many tumbled travertine floors, the holes and crevices had filled with dirt, making the floor look dirty and difficult to keep clean.
Second: The floor had suffered from severe settling, causing many long cracks throughout the floor. Over time the cracks had filled with dirt, leaving long black lines throughout the floor.

The homeowner had done their best to look after their tumbled travertine floor, cleaning it regularly and re-sealing it a few times. However, the results did not last, and the floor continued to soil quickly.
The floor was originally sealed with an impregnating sealer.
As the surface had worn, the sealer could no longer prevent soil from locking into the stone. Given the level of foot traffic on this floor, a surface sealer was selected for this restoration.
This sealer was used to protect the surface of the stone and provide a sacrificial wear layer that can be refreshed as it wears.
Our Tumbled Travertine Restoration Proposal
For this project, we proposed to deep clean the floor, fill the problem cracks, and apply a long-lasting surface sealer.
The cost for this restoration project was in the region of £1,200.00.
The Travertine Floor Restoration Work
On our first visit, we cleaned and sealed a sample area. We also filled the cracks with an epoxy grout filler. The filler performed well, although it was slightly lighter in colour than the sealed stone. Unfortunately, a closer colour match was not available.

On the first day, we installed protection to the surrounding walls, adjoining wood floor, and bespoke hand-painted kitchen furniture. The tiles were slightly uneven, and this precaution prevented splashing during cleaning.
The remainder of the day was spent deep cleaning the floor using a heavy-duty cleaning solution, agitated with a rotary scrubbing machine.
We then removed the slurry using our clean-and-capture equipment. Hot water was sprayed under pressure into the surface of the stone to flush out ingrained soil from the holes and cracks, while the slurry was immediately recovered.

The pressure rinse also cleaned out the cracks and removed any loose material, leaving them ready for filling.
The floor was left overnight to dry.
On the second day, we filled the cracks with a Jasmine epoxy grout filler. This work took around four hours, as additional cracks became visible after cleaning.

Surface Sealing Applied During This Restoration
Tumbled travertine is characterised by natural holes and voids that can trap soil. For this installation, we applied a heavy-duty surface sealer selected to suit the conditions of this floor.
Three coats of a synthetic acrylic floor sealer were applied, producing a durable mid-sheen finish suitable for the level of use in this area.

The homeowner was delighted with the finish and commented that the floor had never looked this good.
